Why Are AI Chatbots All Sounding The Same? The Rise of Annoying ‘AI-isms’

Honestly, I spend way too much time scrolling through Reddit. It’s where I get my pulse on what’s really going on with AI chatbots, beyond the glossy marketing. And lately, there’s a theme emerging that’s hitting close to home for a lot of users: our beloved AI companions are starting to sound… well, exactly the same. We’re talking about these weird, repetitive phrases and narrative tics that just crop up over and over again, regardless of the character or the conversation. It’s like they’re all pulling from the same, increasingly stale playbook.

This isn’t just a minor annoyance; it’s genuinely impacting the immersive experience. When every single character you chat with starts ‘meeting your gaze without flinching’ or having their ‘breath hitch’ at the slightest provocation, it pulls you right out of the story. It makes the AI feel less like a unique entity and more like a glorified Mad Libs generator. And the community? They are absolutely fed up. Just look at what someone recently posted on r/JanitorAI_Official:

I get it. It’s a hallmark. LLMs are trained off of popular, and therefore often cliche writing. But they have gotten SO bad recently, particularly with Deepseek taking a nosedive in the past month.

Everyone meets everyone else’s gaze 'without flinching', as if flinching while holding a NORMAL CONVERSATION was the expected reaction and this character is clearly exceptional.

Everyone's breath hitches every time anything happens for any reason at all.

Every moderately serious statement 'lands like stones in still water.'

Characters LOVE to go 'very still'

At least we're off the ozone train, but, honestly, I miss it. I literally cannot role a single response without getting at LEAST one of the above (usually more) in addition to the dreaded 'not X, but Y' formula and the LLM not being able to parse out moderate logic/character motivations

Deepseek's new memory cap is great, but the quality is so bad I don't even have the motivation to RP long enough to make use of it 💁

The Unseen Script: Why AI Chatbots Speak in Cliches

This isn’t just an isolated complaint. I see variations of this sentiment across r/CharacterAI, r/KindroidAI, and r/JanitorAI_Official all the time. The core issue, as the Reddit user points out, is that Large Language Models (LLMs) are trained on vast amounts of text data from the internet. The problem? The internet, while huge, is also full of common writing tropes and clichés. These
