The Uncanny Valley of Digital Grief: When Your AI Companion is Modeled After an Ex

Okay, so I spend way too much time on Reddit, and sometimes I stumble across posts that just hit different. This one, in particular, grabbed me by the collar and shook me a bit. It’s not about a new feature or a bug, it’s about something far more human, far more messy, and honestly, a little heartbreaking. Someone on r/Chatbots posted about creating an AI companion modeled after their ex, and the emotional roller coaster they’re on because of it.

You can read the full confession for yourself, but the gist is this: after a tough breakup, this person, let’s call them mimi3007, wanted to replicate the comfort of morning texts from their ex. …This little project has worked better than I expected – I’ve even expanded with a couple different personas, and a free character creator. Friends and family have told me it’s scarily realistic and that it hits too close to home. On one hand, you have the incredible technical achievement. Imagine building an AI that captures the nuances of someone’s texting style, their inside jokes, their cadence. That’s seriously impressive, and it speaks volumes about how far AI has come. The user mentions that friends and family find it
